Hello!

We had a great field trip on Wednesday this week to Goldstream Park. We saw some salmon, and participated in a nature walk and scavenger hunt.

In math we learned about place value,  with the ones place, tens hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands. We learned what standard form is (383,028), how to turn it into expanded form (300000+80000+3000+20+8), and written form (three hundred eighty three thousand twenty eight). We also looked at comparing numbers using < = >. By the end of the week most students had this, though some will need review next week.

In language arts we finished off our Grammar unit with a review and test. Most of the students did very well with it, only showing slight confusion in certain areas. We also started reading our own personal Goosebumps stories.

In science we learned about concentration levels. We discussed the difference between a solvent (does the dissolving) and solute (being disolved). How unsaturated solutions mean you can still dissolve solute, saturated solutions you can’t dissolve anymore solute,  and super saturated solutions where you can heat up to dissolve more.

We didn’t do much social studies this week, as we are still waiting to see about the election results.

We did however create our Art cards, based in Ted Harrison. They should be out in a month for viewing and purchase.

Next week we will review our solutions unit and have a final test.  We will review the BC election, and look at Canadian parties. We will learn about estimating and rounding with addition in math. We will continue our novel study. We will also learn some French Halloween vocab. It should be a good week.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday

Hello!

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving weekend.

In math this week we looked at multiplication and division of numbers with 0s on the end. With multiplication: 4000 x 200000, you move all eight 0s over to the answers, then multiply  the remaining number (4 x 2 =8, with 00000000). With division, you cross the 0s out evenly on both sides, so 370000 ÷ 100, you cross off two zeroes in both, amd divide what is rest (3700 ÷ 100 = 3700. With practice the students got this easy, but some found it challenging ro know when to multiply or divide.

In language arts we listened to an entire Goosebumps book: A Shocker on Shock Sfreet. I went over what students are to do for each chapter, and make predictions on ehat happens next. We also went over what a synopsis looks like.  This is in preparation for next week when students read their own novel.

In science we looked at density and layering liquids. We attempted to make rainbows in a bottle, with varying success.

In social studies we looked at the local candidates for our provincial election. We researched their background, played a guessing game, and ranked them individually. On Friday we took part in the BC student vote. Democracy in action!

On Thursday we got to make dream catchers with Ms. Trish, practicing our weaving skills.

Next week we have a field tip on Wednesday,  make sure to get that permission form back ASAP. In math we will look at place value, with expanded, standard, and word form. In language arts we will finish off our grammar unit with some review and a test.  In science we will look into saturation levels and solubility. Going to be a busy week with no school next Friday.

Have a good weekend and see you Monday.

Hello!

It was good to see those who dropped by on Meet the Teacher night, to check out our classroom and what we have been learning about.

In math this week we reviewed our pattern work and took a final test.  Students did well with their equations, and it gave me a good picture of where they are at with their learning.

In language arts we created some silly sentences using adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs. We has to use some alliteration to organize our work, which game us sentences like: Amazing Ardvark Acting Ackwardly, and Terrific Tiger Tightroping Tragically. We also learned how to complete a mad libs, and practices two of them, with entertaining results.

In social studies we researched the BC provincial political parties: BC NDP, BC CONSERVATIVES, and BC Green. Students had to research the party and find out there campaign promises to make posters for each. Today our class had a big discussion on each of the different points of view and opinions each party was focusing on. We learned about the left center right political spectrum, and went over examples about how each. We also took a small self assessment quiz, to see which area students aligned with more. After, we went over how our opinions change, how there are some areas we might feel strong in, while others not. I also went over how bias can influence others, and my explanation of each of the political viewpoints probably had some bias in it, so they should continue to get more information from other viewpoints and sources.

In science we learned the different between a mixture and a solution. A mixture is combining two or more things, but they can be easily separated. A solution is combining two or more things, but it’s very hard to separate them. We practiced by trying to separate chocolat milk or muddy water, and found some could be separated with a filter, while others could not.

Next week we will start our whole number unit in math, learning tricks to multiply 6000 by 20000, and dividing 50000 by 100. We will be listening to a novel study on Tuesday, learning how to keep notes and write a synopsis by the end of the week. We will look at the local candidates for the provincial election, and participating on the student vote on Friday. Finally we will look more into mixtures and solutions in science. Going to be a fun week.

Have a good long weekend and see you Tuesday.

Hello!

Another short one this week, with Monday off, but we managed to get a lot done.

In language arts this week we started our grammar unit, learning all about adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, and synonyms. We played many games for each, and created adjective acrostic names poems about ourselves.

In social studies we looked into the different types of governments around the world, and learned about how Canada’s government is selected, through indirect democracy. We watched some videos and learned about how First past the post works.

In science class we learned about the phases of matter, and reviewed how each state can move from one phase to a other through how much heat is applied to them. We experimented with a couple of the phases, learning more about each.

Math this week was a tricky one, because we were dealing with algebra and letters. Students had some difficulty understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction, where addition is small number + small number = big number, and subtraction is big number – small number = small number, where you can either swap small numbers around or add them.  An example question was turning 34 + H = 57 into a subtraction question, so addition is Sm + Sm = Big, you can take the big number (57) and subtract the small number (34) and you will get 25. Or with K – 23 = 42, you can add yoyr small numbers 23 and 42 to get 65. We will be reviewing what we have learned so far with patterns next week for a final unit test,  so many students will get another opportunity to learn and try to grasp the concept.

We finished up our Picasso self portraits and wrote our clues about ourselves. We will see who is able to guess which student is which.

Next week is our open house on Thursday, a good chance to see what we have been learning about. We will review our math pattern concepts for a final test on Friday,  practice more grammar work with some alliteration animal sentences and mad libs, research the political parties on British Columbia for the upcoming election, and start our mixture/solutions part of our science unit. Going to be a busy week, so it’s good we get the full 5 days.

Have a good weekend, and see you Mondy.
