Hello!

We spent a lot of this week prepping for the end of the year,  finishing off work for next week.

In math we reviewed patterns, rounding, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication,  division,  perimeter,  and area this week, in preparation for next week’s final test. Each day was a slow start, but they did well by the end.

In language arts we wrote our synopsis for the novel study. They turned out pretty well, especially since students did not get a cheat sheet this time. I will be making them next week for the report card.

In social studies we are finishing up our country slideshow. In science we started and finished our rock slideshows. I am hoping next week we get to present them.

Next weekwe have track and field on Thursday, so a TTOC will be in for me. We will review fractions and have our final math test on Tuesday. We will finish up our novel study booklet and present some of our presentations.  We will also start some coding activities. Friday we will also be going to Carlow Park. Its going to be a busy week.

Have a good weekend and see you Monday.

Hello!

Our last short week of the year, and the weather worked out well for Friday’s Jump rope for heart.

In math we finished off our fraction and decimal unit, first my reviewing the last 6 weeks, then taking a final test. The students showed which area they had some confusion with,  but most did pretty well.

In language arts we typed up our poems and made poetry booklets. On Friday we held a poetry Cafe, with snacks and a lot of finger snapping. At first students were apprehensive about sharing, but by the end everyone wanted to share.

We have also been powering through our novel study, and hope to finish it on Monday.

In social studies we started our country slideshow presentation. We will be working on these for the next week.

We also reviewed the rock cycle and took a quiz in science. Most did well, with only a couple of mistakes.

Next week we will finish and type up our novel study synopsis, start reviewing the math concepts we learned this year for a final test,  work on our country slideshop, and start a rock inquiry presentation. Should be a good week.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday

Hello!

Well things sure started off wild this week, with our class heat line malfunctioning and blowing 50 degree air inside. It seems to have been fixed for now, we will see how long it lasts.

We has our spring concert on Tuesday.  The grade 5s played their ukuleles well. There were a couple of non listening choices made, and we had a conversation about that.

We also went on the Red Dress walk on Tuesday,  to bring awareness to the missing and murdered indigenous women.

In math we learned more about decimal place value, what each value is worth, and how to order numbers. We learned that 5 285 is 5 + 0 2 + 0.08 + 0.005. We also learned that a larger numbers of 7.18 can be 7.19, 7.2, as well as 7.1819482.

In language arts we learned about two new poems: couplet and limerick. A couplet uses similar syllables with their lines, as well as rhyming the last words of every two (couple) lines. A limerick uses an AABBA rhyming format.  Students got pretty silly with their limerick.

Students also started their part 2 novel study booklet. Thought it seems like some students are already finished

In social studies we have been working hard to finish our family heritage booklets. We have about half the class finished, and will have everyone done next week.

In science we learned more aboutthw rock cycle, as well had science venture come in and teach more about rocks and minerals.the students had a great time and were very engaged.

Students also finished off their nail string art projects, they turned out pretty good.

On Thursday we got to see a mariachi band play, as well as sample some taco roll ups and church’s. It was a pretty fun time.

Next week we have our field trip to the legislative building and beacon hill on Wednesday, learn about adding and subtraction of decimals in math, finish off novel study book 2, learn about onomatopoeia in poetry, start researching a other country to compare with Canada in social studies,  review and take a quiz on the rock cycle in math, and possibly even take a French test. Looks like a other busy week.

Have a good weekend, and see you Tuesday (Monday is a pro d)

Hello!

Its starting to get hot out.  We had a very busy week, with more to come.

In math we learned how to turn a fraction into a decimal, and a decimal into a fraction. We used our knowledge of equivalent fractions to convert 3/5 to 6/10, making it 0.6. We also talked about decimal place value to the thousandths,  so 0.5 and 0.50 are the same, and 0.7 is bigger than 0.693.

In language arts we learned about haiku and cinquain poems. We created some haiku riddles about animals.

We also created some cinquin poems.

We also fonished book 1 of the novel study series. Students on Friday had a mini book club to review and go over the novel.

In science we learned about the 3 types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous,  and metamorphic.  We learned how each rock is formed, and how the rock cycle takes thousands of years to change.

In social studies we have been working on our family heritage country booklets. Some students have theirs printed and are working on pictures,  while others are still researching.

We have started a nail string art project. It’ll take 2 weeks to finish. Students chose their own design.

On Thursday we did our dress rehearsal for next week’s spring concert. They sounded great. On Friday we did a mini track and field experience tryout day, so see who wants to represent Ruth King at the district track meet.

Next week we will hopefully get our track and field team organized. We have the spring concert on Tuesday, afternoon show is 1pm, night shownis 6pm. We will learn about decimal place value in math, couplet and limerick poems, start novel 2, finish the family heritage booklet, learn more about rocks with Science Venture coming in, and finish our string nail art. These weeks seem to keep getting busier…

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Hello!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Allergy season has definitely started.

In math this week we learned about equivalent fractions. They are fractions that represent the same amount of space, but are different numbers or pieces. So 1/2 is the same as 3/6 and 8/16. We learned that we can use multiplication and division to show equivalent fractions, and compare fractions using a common demoninator.

In language arts we worked more on similes and metaphors with I Am flip book poetry. Students compare themselves to other things,  and we make a little flip book.

We also started our novel study. Students chose one of 3 books to read: Island, Everest, or Dive. They are a 3 part novel series, which we will take 6 weeks to finish.

In science we started our look into the rock cycle by checking out different types of rocks. We spent the afternoon looking at about 50 different types of rocks,  and noticing the different characteristics.

We started our heritage books this week, researching our family’s country of origin. Students are looking at the type of government, unique foods, and interesting facts about the country their family originated from. We will be turning the information into a small booklet.

On Monday we counted up our money from the young entrepreneur fair, and subtracted the float, cost of materials, and possible donation, to see if we made a profit. Most students managed to make some money,  with the average being around $50 in profit. Most students donated about 5-10% to the class charity, the SPCA, while a couple others chose a different one.

Next week we are going to learn about decimals in math, haiku and cinquain poetry, finish our novel study and have a mini book club, learn about the rock cycle, and finish our heritage research. On thirsday we are having a dress rehearsal for the spring conert. On Friday we will be doing our track and field day, giving students a chance to try out different events. Should be a good week.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.

Hello!

Hope everyone had a nice long weekend.

In math this week we learned how to put fractions on a number line. We use number lines to help compare fractions with different denominator. Most students did pretty well with this, though it took a little practice.

In language arts we worked more on similes and metaphors, first by finding them in the Grinch song, then by making acrostic poems about ourselves, this time using more poetic devices.

We finished off our human body presentation on Tuesday, then presented to the class Wednesday.  Most showed a good amount of information, though some were a little too silly. They are on the students google drive if you want to see their work.

We also finished off our French all about me posters, they look amazing.

On Friday we went over setting our price for the young entrepreneur project. We took our $cost,  divided by our total units, to find our price per unit. We then looked at our market research to think of a good price to sell our product at. Then we looked at how many products me must sell at that price to cover our cost, and how each item after is profit. I talked with some students about splitting their product into smaller containers to make more units, as they wouldn’t make a profit unless they sold all but 2. Not leaving much room for error.

We also worked on wall posters for the fair, showing our product and price. These are additional posters for those not able to make one at home.

Next week is the big fair, I will be emailing out more information on Monday about what we need. Students have an opportunity to sharing their product at the assembly on Monday if they want. We will also be working on some rainbow poetry and fraction sets in math. Its going to be a very busy week.

Have a nice weekend and see you Monday.

Hello!

We’re back, and as busy as ever! It was a little review this week, then got right into it.

In language arts we started by writing about our spring break.

We then started our poetry unit. We learned about some poetic devices, such as alliteration, hyperbole,  simile, and metaphor.  We will use these techniques for the next couple of weeks.

In math we reviewed our operations,  then jumped into fractions. We reviewed that fractions are pieces of a whole, and each piece must be equal. We then practiced drawing fractions through a Battleship game.

In science we started our inquiry project about the human body,  where students needed to think of something they’ve ever wondered about with the human body. They have been researching and making a presentation for next week.

In French we learned about difference preference: adore (love), aime (like), n’aime pas (dont like), and deteste (hate). We then started researching for our French All About Me project for next week.

Earlier in the week I sent home a small Setting Price worksheet, for students to tell me how much money they have spent, and how many products they have made. This is due next week, so we can set out final price.

I also sent home a family survey to be completed over the next couple of week. Students are to gather information about where their family comes from.

Some big projects up ahead for sure. Next week we will finalize our price for our Young entrepreneur project, learn how to put a fraction on a number line in math, present our human body presentations, and finish our French All About Me. Should be a good week.

Have a good long weekend, and see you next week.

Hello!

We did it! We made it to Spring break. We spent this week learning a couple new skills for after the break.

In math we continues practicing our addition and subtraction with money. We played The Price is Right, where students started with $1000, then made estimated guesses on store items, found the difference between the real price, and subtracted the difference from their total money. It took a couple of rounds, but most students got the concept. We went through 18 items, then showcase showdown. By the end, half the class was in the negative, with three students still having more than $400.

We.finished our Candidate posters

We learned how to create a Google slides presentation. We first made one about unicorns as a class, where I guided students through the basic steps. Then they all got to choose their own topics and make their own. They were pretty good for first time projects.

On Friday we had our boardgame day. Students earned a games day through the class points. We played Scategories, sushi go, point salad, Saboteur, battle sheep, Catan, trash pandas, stupify,  and 5 minute dungeon. It was a little chaotic, but good fun.

On Friday students took home their work folder. Please try to get it back when we return. Also dont forget about the young entrepreneur project, students should be working on finishing their products (unless they have an expiry date).

Have a good break and see you in a couple of weeks

Hello!

We had a pretty good week. We needed to start off with a conversation about appropriate expected behaviour, and it seemed to settle the class.

In math we started learning about money.  We practiced some menu math, tallying up orders from a fast food menu. We then used the Flipp app to plan out meal plans with a budget of $50. Students needed to find the price of food items for breakfast,  lunch,  and dinner.

We finished off our novel study booklets in language arts, decorating and gluing them together.

In social studies we finished up our government work with a review session and final test. Students were able to make a cheat sheet for the test, most used it well. We also worked on making our own candidates, with 8 campaign promises,  and a plan to pay for it all. They are pretty interesting. A couple of students are finishing up for next week.

In science we created giant human body cut outs for each organ system. I will add a picture next week.

We learned a new boardgame this week called Saboteur. Most of the students had a lot of fun with it.

Next week is our literacy week. There will be daily events, as well as home events for prizes.  In math we will play the Price is Right and learn how to use a balance sheet. In science we will learn how to make a Google slides presentation, which we will use for a couple of projects next term. We will also go over the final preparations for the young entrepreneur project, with expectations for what needs to be done during Spring break. We will hopefully earn our Boardgames day for Friday.

Have a good weekend, and see you next week.

Hello!

Wow we had a busy week, with two field trips and a bunch of tests.

Our trip on Tuesday to the curling rink went very well.  On our walk we checked our Fan Tan alley. At curling the students learned the basics, then played some mini games.

Our trip on Thursday to the museum went well, though the excitement level was a little too much for the venue. Students were pretty engaged with all of the exhibits,  learning lots about history.

In math we learned how to find area and perimeter of rectangles when there is missing information.  So if we know the length is 6, and perimeter is 20. We know both lengths equal 12, so we need 8 more. Divide that by two sides, each side is 4. 6 x 4 is an area of 24. If we know the area is 30, and perimeter is 26, we find all the pairs that multiply to make 30 (30×1, 5×6, 10×3, 15×2). Then we add the sides and multiply by 2, if they equal the perimeter it is correct (10+3=13×2÷26).

We had a review session and mini quiz on voting in Canada and political parties. Students did pretty well with it, especially with the difference between each party.

In science we had had a review sessions and a final test on the human body. Currently marking it now, but it seems like the students did well.

We conducted our market research today with the other grade 5 students. We made surveys about our product, and asked others some questions. This will help us understand what the customer want. I have students take home their worksheet to be finished off for next week.

Next week we learn about money in math, finish our novel study book report in language arts,  have a big review and final test on government in social studies, and create some human body cutout pictures in science. Going to be another busy week.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.
