Hello!

Another short one this week, with Monday off, but we managed to get a lot done.

In language arts this week we started our grammar unit, learning all about adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, and synonyms. We played many games for each, and created adjective acrostic names poems about ourselves.

In social studies we looked into the different types of governments around the world, and learned about how Canada’s government is selected, through indirect democracy. We watched some videos and learned about how First past the post works.

In science class we learned about the phases of matter, and reviewed how each state can move from one phase to a other through how much heat is applied to them. We experimented with a couple of the phases, learning more about each.

Math this week was a tricky one, because we were dealing with algebra and letters. Students had some difficulty understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction, where addition is small number + small number = big number, and subtraction is big number – small number = small number, where you can either swap small numbers around or add them.  An example question was turning 34 + H = 57 into a subtraction question, so addition is Sm + Sm = Big, you can take the big number (57) and subtract the small number (34) and you will get 25. Or with K – 23 = 42, you can add yoyr small numbers 23 and 42 to get 65. We will be reviewing what we have learned so far with patterns next week for a final unit test,  so many students will get another opportunity to learn and try to grasp the concept.

We finished up our Picasso self portraits and wrote our clues about ourselves. We will see who is able to guess which student is which.

Next week is our open house on Thursday, a good chance to see what we have been learning about. We will review our math pattern concepts for a final test on Friday,  practice more grammar work with some alliteration animal sentences and mad libs, research the political parties on British Columbia for the upcoming election, and start our mixture/solutions part of our science unit. Going to be a busy week, so it’s good we get the full 5 days.

Have a good weekend, and see you Mondy.
