Hello!

Finally a full week back. We managed to get everything done this week, and are on our way to finishing everything by the winter break.

In math we finished off our multiplication strategies, practicing more skip counting, and learning about the break up method. We took our quiz early this week, and learned a strategy for estimating larger multiplication equations (53×37, 50×40=2000). We have a quiz Monday on it, so study up!

In science we started our simple machines unit, and focused on two this week: inclined plane and level and fulcrum. With the included plane, we learned that you can make lifting things easier by spreading our the distance. With levers, we learned that the closer the fulcrum is to the load, the easier it is to lift. We finished off with building catapult!

In social studies we started looking at Canadian regions. We colored a map and researched traits of each. This is a grade 4 topic, but helps us go into resources,  and it turns out some students didn’t learn it last year.

We did a lot of French this week, learning how to say ‘my name is’, ‘my age is’, the months and days, and numbers 1 to 60. It was a lot. But we are pretty much caught up.

In language arts we started working on descriptive writing, and wrote about our favoourite foods. They sound tasty.

Next week we will look at two digit multiplication using the box method, perspective writing, our regions brochure project,  and more simple machines.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Hello!

Well that was our first really short week, with the half day on Thursday, and a Pro D on Friday. We still managed to get a lot of work done.

In math we took our final test focusing on place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction. Most students did very well with the unit, and others now know what to focus on. We also started our multiplication unit by looking at two different strategies: drawing and array and skip counting. Both of these are grade 4 strategies to help with multiplication, they just tend to take a while.

In science we finished off our review of energy by building our paper rollercoasters. Here is a video of the completed ones.

In social studies, we reviewed our government work with a trivia jeopardy game, then I had students write a cheat sheet study guide from their notes, and finally we took our final government test. Many students used their cheat sheet well, while others did not.

That was about it for this week, we were supposed to do some French, but the aper rollercoasters took too long.

Next week we will look at the break up strategy with multiplication (7×6, break 7 into 5 and 2, multiply broken up pieces by 6 (5×6=30, 2×6=12) and add pieces back together 30+12=42). We will start some descriptive writing in language arts, start and review the Canadian regions unit in social studies, and start our simple machines unit in science.  Should be a good time.

Have a good weekend, and see you next week.

Hello!

Hope everyone had a good long weekend, mine ended up being longer due to sickness.

Tuesday apparently did not go well, but we managed to catch everything up on Wednesday and had a discussion on how to behave when I am not here.

In math this week we have been reviewing out place value and whole number unit. We will be having our final on Monday (I hope), covering place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction.

In social studies we looked at different types of governments from around the world: democracy, oligarchy, monarchy, and dictatorship. We reviewed our work and took a test on Friday. We will see who studied.

In science we started reviewing energy, as an introduction to simple machines.  We focused on potential and kinetic energy, and started building paper rollercoaster. They will be completed next week.

In language arts we practiced our proofreading, and took a test on our skills. Students had to correct a paragraph about thr book fair.

Speaking of the book fair, it is next Monday,  so don’t forget to bring your money in.

Next week is a short one, with the half day Thursday,  and a pro d on Friday. We will be finishing our math unit and our government unit, look at goal setting,  and finish off those rollercoaster.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.

Hello!

Wow we were busy this week, getting everything ready for Friday.

In math we reviewed rounding, then relearning how to do subtraction with regrouping and borrowing. By the end of the week most students were pretty confident with it.

In language arts we learned more about Remebrance day.  We first worked on a reading package, then watched some videos to make a word web, and finally write some paragraphs about the day. With our Goosebumps novel study, most students were able to finish their work this week, completing their synopsis today.

In social studies we reviewed how voting works in Canada and took a quiz on the subject. Some students did very well, while others hopefully learned a lesson on studying before a quiz to help.

In art we painted and cut out some poppies for our display board.

It was great seeing so many of our class help out with the Remebrance day ceremony on Friday. We helped MC, read poems, and took part in flag bearing.

Next week we will review our place value unit for a final test. Work hard on proofreading and take a quiz showing what we know. Review and learn about energy in science. Review and practice experiencing different types of governments in social studies. Going to be another busy week.

Have a good long weekend, and see you Tuesday.

Hello!

We had a lot of fun this week with Halloween on Thursday. There were some cool costumes.

In math we learned about rounding, estimation, and addition. It took a couplenof days, but most of the class got rounding down. Addition was more of a review, as most students seemed to have remembered their past strategies.

In language arts we focused on reading our Goosebumps novel study, where most students are finished and have started typing up their synopsis. On Friday the students wrote about their Halloween night, sounds like a lot of fun occured.

In science we finished off our solutions unit with a review and a final test. It gave me a good idea at where they are at with their learning. Some students may need to rethink studying to help them prepare.

In social studies we went over the BC election, discussing minority and majority governments. We then researched the federal parties, as it is good to know the difference.

For art we made some symmetrical pumpkins.

On Thursday we had a pumpkin carving contest, as I do this every year to help strengthen team building.

Next week we will look at subtraction in math, synopsis writing in language arts, remebrance day for social stidues, and review our voting in Canada information for a quiz.

Have a good weekend and see you Monday.
