Hello!

In math this week we learned a new strategy for solving larger division equations called the bar method. It uses multiplication and subtraction to make our number smaller. We used magic numbers (100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1) as they are more familiar with those multiples.

In language arts we wrote our third rough draft story about the secret grown up rules. They have all be pretty entertaining to read so far.

In science we finished off our Rube Goldbergs, here is a video of them

We also started our new science unit, looking at the human body organ systems. This week we looked at the digestive system, and students performed an experiment to mimic the pathway food takes. Some were not pleased…

In social studies we learned more about clear cutting as a forestry method, and all about aquaculture and fish farming. We discussed the positives and negatives of each, and created our little project.

In art we worked on a winter nighttime mosaic art piece, though only about half the class was able to finish, so I will put them on display next week.

Next week we will choose 1 of our stories to make a type up and add more detail to a final copy, learn how to use long division as a strategy, look into the respiratory and circulatory system, write an essay about a natural resource of BC, learn about French culture with Le Carnival de Quebec, and learn about Lunar new year. Should be a good week.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.

Hello!

It’s starting to get colder, make sure to bring appropriate winter clothing.

In language arts this week we started a creative writing project, where we will be coming up with crazy and bizarre reasons why we have specific rules. Like brush your teeth or they may come out and bite people, or comb your hair or it will take over your body.

In math we started our division unit, learning three different strategies. We looked at the relationship with multiplication, how to use an array, and repeated subtraction.

In social studies we learned about thenpros and cons of mining. We practiced mining chocolate chip cookies, and made a project about our learning.

In science we worked hard on building Rube Goldberg machines. Most were complete by the end of the week, but about half not filmed, so next week there will be a video.

On Thursday we had guests from John Stubbs give a presentation on late French immersion as an option for grade 6. Talk it over, as there will be an info session next week.

Next week we will look at larger division strategies, write more secret rules stories, learn about forestry and aquaculture, and start our human body unit for science.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.

Hello!

We are back! Hope everyone had a nice two weeks. We spent this week settling back in to the routine.

In math reviewed addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Everyone was fine with most of it, except two digit by two digit multiplication. This strategy has been a challenge for about half the class.

In social studies we started our natural resource unit, and learned about different resources we use for energy and electricity.  We talked about renewable and non renewable resources, the pros and cons on a pipeline, and worked on a personal project about energy.

In language arts we wrote about our holiday break. Sounds like most were a lot of fun.

In science we discussed complex machines, and looked at some Rube Goldberg machine videos, as next week we will be creating our own.

In art we painted some snowy towns, as there is a prediction for next week we may get snow.

Next week we will dive into division in math, start some creative writing, create some Rube Goldberg machines, and learn about mining as a resource.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.
