Hello!

For such a short week, we sure were busy. Beach day was very successful, lots of fun and learning.

In math this week we introduced algebra and the relationship between operations and equations. It was a little challenging for students, but everyone improved by the end of the week. We focused on labelling our addition, subtraction, multiplication,  and division equations with the terms ‘small’ and ‘big’ numbers. So with addition and multiplication, it is small number (4) + or × small number (6) = big number (10 or 24). With subtraction and division,  it is big number (24) – or ÷ small number (12) = small number (12 or 2). We can change addition equations to subtraction equations (4+7=11 to 11-7=4) and multiplication questions to division (3×7=21 to 21÷7=3). We can also swap the small numbers (14-6=8 or 14-8=6). This helps us solve algebra questions such as 8+H=20, where you rewrite it as 20-8=12. Students were still having some difficulty with how to rewrite their equations, but they are getting better.

In language arts we learned about Orange shirt day, and our own identity. We created shirts showcasing our own identity, and discussed how we would feel if those shirts were erased. Our display board will be up next week. We also wrote a paragraph about Orange shirt day.

In social studies we reviewed the grade 4 concept of the Canadian Regions. We colored a map, and started researching the different regions of Canada.

In science we reviewed the grade 4 concept of the phases of matter, and how each state of matter can phase and change into a different state.

Next week we will be started to research a specific region of Canada to make a brochure. We will review our pattern work for our final test of our first unit.  We will be starting our grammar unit, learning about nouns, adjectives, and verbs. We will start learning the difference between mixtures and solutions.

Emergency forms went out this week, try to get them in ASAP. Have a good weekend, and see toy Monday.

Hello!

Wow were we busy this week, especially with the Terry Fox run on Friday. Pur class is making me run about 3km; we will see how the rest of the school did. Handball and Cross country forms need to start coming in.

In language arts this week we focused on Terry Fox. We watched videos, read booklets, made a class word web, and wrote paragraphs about him.

In math we started our pattern unit. We learned that when we see 5, 9, 6, 10, 7, our pattern rule is start at 5, add 4, subtract 3. We also practiced making t tables based on different variables. When given a question like ‘Mr. S runs 100m for every $2, how hard will he run after $16’, students would make a table showing the intervals. For our quiz on Friday, most did very well.

We also started some of next week’s math, as it is a short week. We focused on addition and subtraction questions, where with adding, it is a small number + small number = big number (5+7=12 or 4+P=9), and subtraction is big – small = small (18 – 3 = 15 or 31 -U = 26). With each equation, the smaller numbers can be swapped, making the equations easier to solve.

In social studies we labeled and colored a map of Canada, with provinces and capital cities. We also matched provinces to their capital.

In science we practiced using the scientific method.  We observed rusty vs shiny pennies, and researched how to make them shiny again. We then experimented with different materials, and found out ketchup or lemon juice did very well at making them shiny.

For art, we created some Picasso self portraits. We came up with clues, for others to play Picasso Guess Who.

We have a short week next week, with a pro d day on Monday. Tuesday is our open house, from 5 to 6. Wednesday we will be going to Witty’s for the day. We will continue our algebra conversation in math (P-7=12), learn and write about Orange shirt day, look into the regions of Canada, and review the phases of matter for science.  Going to be a jam packed week.

Hello!

We finished off our first full week of grade 5. It went pretty well, our class seems to have a good amount of hard workers, with only a few needing reminders. I sent out Online Consent emails on Friday, we need those sent in ASAP so we can start getting started on some of our projects.

In math this week we did a quick 3 day review of grade 4, and completed the math assessment to see where students are at. There seems to be a good range of learners this year.

In language arts we learned the parts of a paragraph: topic sentence, 3 to 5 ideas, and conclusion. We used this, and a word web, to help organize our writing. We then write about our summer vacation. From the few I have read so far, sounds like a lot of fun summers trips.

In science this week we looked at the scientific method; observe, research, hypothesize, experiment, record, and share info. We practiced this with a skittles melting experiment. We also played “Whats in the box” game, where students used describing words and their sense of touch to guess what in the box.

In French we learned how to say Hello, How are you, respond, and goodbye. The intro to French conversation. Students went around the room conversing with each other.

For art we created our personalized puzzle piece. I put our class puzzle together on Friday.

We got most of our beach day forms and agenda money in, keep it up!

Next week we will be focusing on Terry Fox and writing another paragraph. We will start our pattern unit in math (4, 7, 10, 13, 16), and label a Canadian map for social studies. In science we will experiment more with the scientific method.  Should be a good week.
