Hello!

We had a pretty interesting week with trying out all the different types of governments. The students learned a lot, and seemed to have a lot of fun.

In math we reviewed multiplication and division for our final test. Students did very well, showing me what they know. About half the class only got 1 wrong.

In language arts we started a new novel study: Escape from Lemoncello’s Library.  We are already on chapter 20. So far a bunch of 12 year old are trying to find clues to help them escape the library. First ro be successful wins a large prize.

In social studies we practiced more different types of governments. On Monday was Direct democracy, where everyone voted on everything, and everything took longer to finish. On Tuesday was Monarchy, where some students (whose grandparents went to ruth king) became queen or king. They made rules, bribed peers to stay in power, and avoided being usurped.  On Wednesday was oligarchy, where our richest students (in points) made the rules. They managed to last all day through subtle bribes along the way to keep the people satisfied.  On Thursday was representative democracy, where students voted for reps in each table to represent them and vote for them. We also researched which countries around the world follow and use the difference types of government, and finally a small quiz on Friday.

In science we learned about the respiratory system.  We learned that we breath through our mouth and nose, the oxygen goes down the trachea, through the bronchioles of the lungs, to the alvioli, where oxygen is traded for carbon dioxide, which then leaves the body. The diaphragm is the muscle that controls this breaking in and out.

In art we finished off our mosaic witer night displays

I also introduced the students to the Young Entrepreneur fair, showing ideas from past students, and briefly talking about the expectations. They are pretty excited about it.

Next week we will go further with the YE fair, and a permission form will be going home. We will learn about clocks and reading time in math, more novel study,  learn how the heart works, and the history of voting in Canada. Another fun week ahead.

Have a good weekend and see you Monday.

Hello!

We had a pretty fun week this week, especially on Friday. Great times had by all!

In language arts this week we wrote 2 more Secret Rules stories, and then chose one to type up. Students were given a template and added their own information to fir the story. By Friday almost every student had finished their stories. Some are pretty interesting. I will be turning them into a book hopefully next week.

In math we learned the steps involved in long division. It took a while, but by the end of the week it seems most of the students got it down. The steps are Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down. We used a multiplication chart to help memorize the steps, then eventually used other strategies for the divide and multiply part.

In social studies we started learning about different types of governments from around the world. We looked at direct and indirect democracy, oligarchy and theocracy, and the different autocracy’s like monarchy and dictatorship. Students then participated in a ‘Stranded on a deserted island’ choose your own adventure to determine which type of government they would use to survive. Most went with representative democracy, but a couple ended with dictatorship. On Friday the class participated in a dictatorship day, where the rules were very strict. Students needed to line up by the bell, not allowed washroom break until recess or lunch, no noise or calling out. They did pretty well with it, but some strikes were given out. Good thing I was a corrupt dictator, and students could bribe me with points. At the end of the day students were given the task to draw their dictator, these were the results.

In science we started learning about the human body. We learned that we are made of cells, that form into tissue, which form into organs, which form into organ systems. We then learned about our first system, the digestive system. Students learned that when we eat food, the mouth breaks up the food by chewing and saliva, then it moves down the esophagus to the stomach where acid and enzymes break down the food more. It travels to the small intestine where the nutrients are absorbed, then to the large intestine where water and salt is absorbed. It finally leaves through the rectum. Students got to experience this through a lovely experiment using bread, coke, and a squeezable sock. Only like 6 kids had to leave the room for a break.

I was also able to finish off our Rube Goldberg video.

For art we started creating winter mosaics, they will be displayed next week.

Next week we will review multiplication and division for a final test in math. We will start a novel study in language arts called ‘Escape from Mr. Lemonchello’s Library’ as well as finish our drawing off from our secret story. In science we will learn about the respiratory system. In social studies we will practice the other types of governments, one each day, as well as learn about which countries practice these different types of governments from around the world. We will learn about the Carnival de Quebec in French class, and get an introduction into the Young Entrepreneur fair for the spring. Should be another good week.

Have a good weekend and see you next week.

Hello!

We had a very busy week with our field trip on Tuesday. They students had a great time at the pool.

In math this week we learned about bar division, where we use multiplication and subtraction to solve large division equations. We used our “magic numbers” of 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 to help. With this strategy, if you have the equation of 472 ÷ 3, your first magic number is 100. 3×100 is 300. 472-300=172. The second magic number is 50. 3×50 is 150, 172-150=22. The third magic number is 5. 3×5=15, 22-15=7. The forth magic number is 2. 3×2 is 6, 7-6=1. When you finally get to a number smaller than your divider, it is your remainder. You add up your magic numbers for your answer, so 100+50+5+2=157r1.

In language arts we started our group story blueprints about the secret adult rules. We then chose one and wrote a more detailed story. Some students examples include “wear a helmet or your head will explode”, “dry your clothing or they will eat you”, and “don’t swallow gum or it will dissolve you”.

In social studies we reviewed the levels of government, then went over the leaders of each government. With Federal, it is run by the Prime Minister, elected MPs, and takes place in the House of Commons. With Provincial, it is run by the Premier, elected MLAs, and takes place in parliament or legislative building. With municipal, it is run by a mayor, elected counselors, and in town hall. We took a small quiz on it on Thursday. Some students did very well, though others hopefully realize the benefits of studying.

In science we mostly finished off our Rube Goldberg machines. We filmed most of them, with only 1 or 2 for next week. Then I can put the video together.

In art we worked with watercolor paints for a snowy town.

We also had a visit from John Stubbs about their French Immersion program for grade 6 students. Some students seemed interested, there is an info session at John Stubbs on Tuesday the 20th at 630.

Next week we will learn long division in math, more story writing in language arts, learning different types of governments in social studies,  and start human body in science. Should be a good week.

Have a good weekend, and see you next week.

Hello!

We had a pretty good first week back.

In math this week, we reviewed addition, subtraction, and multiplication on the first day, then spent the rest of the week learning strategies to solve division equations. We learned about the relationship between division and multiplication,  so 40÷8=5 and 5×8=40. We learned how to draw an array to solve divisions with remainders. We also learned how to use repeated subtraction to solve division equations. The students were not a fan of that strategy.

In language arts we wrote about our winter break. It sounds like a lot of fun occured. We then started listening to some entertaining fictional stories about secret rules told by grown ups. The students found them very funny, and we will use them to help write our own stories.

In social studies we learned how there are three levels of government in Canada: Federal,  Provincial, and Municipal. Each of these levels have different duties and jobs to do. We then created a pictigraph to showcase the different jobs.

In science we learned all about Rube Goldberg machines. We watched a bunch of different ideas, then some of my past years student ones. On Thursday students started creating their own machine  out of a box.

A field trip notice went home early this week. There are only 2 more days left to bring the forms in for Tuesday’s swimming. Next week we will also learned bar division for larger numbers, start writing some short stories about why we have grown up rules, continue making our Rube Goldberg mahines, learn about the different leaders for each level of government, and work on some winter art.

Should be a busy week. Have a good weekend and see you Monday.
