Hello!
We had a very busy week with our field trip on Tuesday. They students had a great time at the pool.
In math this week we learned about bar division, where we use multiplication and subtraction to solve large division equations. We used our “magic numbers” of 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 to help. With this strategy, if you have the equation of 472 ÷ 3, your first magic number is 100. 3×100 is 300. 472-300=172. The second magic number is 50. 3×50 is 150, 172-150=22. The third magic number is 5. 3×5=15, 22-15=7. The forth magic number is 2. 3×2 is 6, 7-6=1. When you finally get to a number smaller than your divider, it is your remainder. You add up your magic numbers for your answer, so 100+50+5+2=157r1.
In language arts we started our group story blueprints about the secret adult rules. We then chose one and wrote a more detailed story. Some students examples include “wear a helmet or your head will explode”, “dry your clothing or they will eat you”, and “don’t swallow gum or it will dissolve you”.
In social studies we reviewed the levels of government, then went over the leaders of each government. With Federal, it is run by the Prime Minister, elected MPs, and takes place in the House of Commons. With Provincial, it is run by the Premier, elected MLAs, and takes place in parliament or legislative building. With municipal, it is run by a mayor, elected counselors, and in town hall. We took a small quiz on it on Thursday. Some students did very well, though others hopefully realize the benefits of studying.
In science we mostly finished off our Rube Goldberg machines. We filmed most of them, with only 1 or 2 for next week. Then I can put the video together.
In art we worked with watercolor paints for a snowy town.

We also had a visit from John Stubbs about their French Immersion program for grade 6 students. Some students seemed interested, there is an info session at John Stubbs on Tuesday the 20th at 630.
Next week we will learn long division in math, more story writing in language arts, learning different types of governments in social studies, and start human body in science. Should be a good week.
Have a good weekend, and see you next week.
