Hello!

We learned all about equivalent fractions this week in math, how the same amount of space is taken up, buy the number of pieces changes. So 3/4 is the same as 9/12. We practices multiplying and dividing to change fraction numbers.

In science we started learning about the rock cycle.  We started by looking at different types of rocks. Then we learned that all rocks can fit into 3 categories: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. They are all formed differently, and can change to others.

In language arts we worked on a new type of poem: cinquiane. There were a lot of rules to this poem,  so it took a while to get them complete.

We started our novel studies this week, where students got to choose one of three books: Island, Everest, or Dive. It is a 3 book series, and we finished the first book on Friday. We then broke into groups and had a small book club, discussing our thoughts on the book. Most of the students were very engaged with the conversation.

Next week we will learn to turn fractions into decimals, practice some limerick poems, have science venture visit our class to learn more about rocks, read book 2 of our series, and participate in the Red Dress Walk on Friday. Another full week.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Hello!

A little late with the post, but better late than never. We had a short week, but still managed to get a lot done.

In language arts we learned about Haiku, and wrote haiku riddle poems about animals.

In french we finally finished our All About Me projects.

In social studies we finished off our heritage fair posters and family trees. The fair was a success, with many visitors and families coming in to learn and share about their culture.

In science we presented our human body inquiry slide shows. They were all well informed, though some students went a little overboard with silly pictures.

In math we learned about fractions of sets, so 5/6 of 24 is 20, and 3/5 of 30 is 18.

On Wednesday Spencer came to visit and discussed what school like would be like next year. We will be discussing possible placements with friends next week.

Next week we are starting a novel study book group, reading one of three books: Island, Everest, and Dive. We will learn about cinquane poetry, helping us practice more rhyming words. We will start our look at the rock cycle  in science.

I hope you all had a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Hello!

Our first full day back, and wow we were busy.

We started out fractions unit in math, by discussing what fractions are: pieces of a whole. We reviewed that the bottom number is the denominator and represents the total number of pieces, as well as the top number being the numerator  which represents the pieces we are focusing on. We looked at comparing fractions as well using a number line. We did so well with our review, we had our quiz early.

In language arts we worked more on simile and metaphor, comparing ourselves to animals and objects.  We created I Am poem flip books, but most were not completed by Friday, so we will have yo finish next week.

We finished off our human body inquiry slide shows. They look great! We will be presenting next week.

We spent most of our week working on our family heritage projects. Most have completed the majority of the project. Students have been encouraged to work on family trees and photos over the weekend to finish off our displays next week.

Next week will be a short one. Spencer will visit on Wednesday for a small presentation.  We will learn about haiku poetry in language arts, presenting our science,  and finishing off our heritage projects. The open house will be 1 to 330 on Thursday. The classroom will be open for those wanting to browse what we have been working on from 1130 to 5.

Have a good weekend,  and see you next week.

Hello!

It was good to see everyone back this week, sounds like a lot of events happened over spring break.

We spent math this week just reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

In language arts we wrote about our spring breaks, some interesting trips.

In social studies we started researching our heritage countries, in preparation for our heritage fair in two weeks. We got most of the family surveys back, which will help students complete their posters. Some students may be working at home on their family tree next week.

In science we started our human body inquiry project, where working in partners, students will research something they have wondered about with the human body. They will be creating and presenting a Google Slides presentation to the class in two weeks.

In french we have started, and a couple students have finished, our French All About Me projects,  showing off our preferences. They will be put on display during our heritage fair.

Next week we will finish off researching our heritage country and start making the poster board  in social studies,  finishnoffmour inquiry slideshow in science, start learning about fractions in math, and continue working on poetry in language arts. First full week back, should be a good one.

Have a food weekend, amd see you Monday.
