Hello!

Looks like fall finally arrives, and it brought the rain. We tallied up all the money from Terry Fox, and it looks like I will have to run just over 33 km. I will be breaking it up by grade, and challenging students to run with me on Thursdays at lunch.

In math this week we started learning about algebra,  and the relationship of equations. We worked on with addition, it is small number + small number = big number,  and subtraction is big number – small number = small number. We also learned that we can swap the small number positions. So to solve 5 + h = 23, you can do 23 -5. Or p – 12 = 42, which can change to 12 + 42. The same goes for multiplication and division. We also practices writing word problems to match equations.

In social studies we learned about Orange shirt day, and I related it to our own identity. We talked about what makes us us, what our values are, likes and dislikes, and our heritage. Then we talked about how residential school wanted to erase the identity of the First Ntions people.  We created orange shirts to represent ourselves and our identity.

In science we reviewed the states and phases of matter from grade 4. It will help us with our mixture and solution unit starting next week.

In language arts we started our grammar unit, learning about how to spice up our sentences with adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs. We created some acrostic name poems to show off our attributes.

Next week we will be looking at reviewing our small pattern unit to finish it off in math. We will start our grade 4 review of Canadian regions in social studies, start mixtures and solutions in science, and make some silly sentences in language arts.

Have a good long weekend, and see you Tuesday.
